Training and Qualifications

Dr Bikram Karmakar completed his medical degree from the University of New South Wales in 2011. He completed his residency training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. He worked extensively in Orthopaedic Surgery in Canberra and Newcastle as well as regional NSW. Dr Karmakar completed a Master of Surgery at University of Sydney in 2015. He completed his Fellowship of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians in 2023. Dr Karmakar values a holistic approach to healthcare. He is a board member of AusActive and is is a member of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine through which he is also currently undertaking fellowship.

Experience

Dr Karmakar has extensive experiences providing medical coverage for various sporting organisations. He works currently as the Chief Medical Officer for the Cronulla Sharks. He is the Team Physician for Sydney Thunder and is part of the doctor working group for Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia. Dr Karmakar has worked for other organisations including FIFA, Basketball Australia, NSW Rugby League, A League and Combat Sports NSW. Dr Karmakar stays up to date with best practice and has presented at various international conferences.

Philosophy

Dr Karmakar has worked with elite athletes but equally values working with patients of all ages regardless of their fitness or athletic background. Dr Karmakar values the importance of managing patients holistically and providing individualised treatments. He values providing treatment with the goal of recovery rather than masking underlying issues. His goal is to keep patients active and provide treatments that attend to the improve quality of life. The concept of lifestyle medicine is intrinsic to how he practices.
